Solar

The sun provides abundant energy in the form of heat and light through a variety of solar power applications.  These applications include:

  • Photovoltaic (PV) systems
  • Concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) systems
  • Passive solar heating and daylighting
  • Solar hot water
  • Solar process heat and space heating and cooling

CWRU’s solar research focuses on device development, particularly of PV and CPV technologies, including organic approaches.  Research at the University also focuses on the reliability, durability, and levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of complete PV systems.  The foundation for this research stems from experience in materials (both hard and soft), fundamentals (e.g., physics), and the PV industry.

Supporting this solar research are two of CWRU’s newest energy centers.  Combined, they create a national research facility with both indoor and outdoor capabilities:

  • Solar Durability and Lifetime Extension (SDLE) Center
  • Materials for Opto/Electronic Research and Education (MORE) Center
