GLEI Sponsored Faculty Member Alp Seherlioglu wins NSF Grant

CWRU Assistnt Professor of Materials Science an Engineering and GLEI Sponsored Faculty Member Alp Sehirlioglu has been awarded the NSF CAREER award from the National Science Foundation.

The NSF CAREER award supports promising and talented researchers who successfully integrate education along with innovative research in their field. Established in 1994, the CAREER award is one of the most prestigious awards given by the National Science Foundation. Dr. Sehirlioglu has received a five-year, $500,000 grant for his project, “Controlled Processing of Self Assembly in Single Crystal Oxide Films.”

Sehirlioglu works on building “self-assembled, higher-dimensional superstructures” at the atomic level. By controlling the way that atoms and molecules naturally fall together, Dr. Sehirlioglu can manipulate a material’s physical, thermal, or electrical properties, as well as how that material outputs energy. Dr. Sehirlioglu’s goal is to form these structures as a single-crystal film.
